Sophie the Toughie

MY cat love story started way before Sophie. Here's how it started...

Dobie

Some 3 years ago we lost our cat tragically.  From the looks of it, Dobie tried to jump from our fence to the ground but her collar got caught by a crooked chicken wire  hanging her to her death.

This is not a good way to start a story but that's what happened..and I hate sugar coating.

I was devastated.  I rescued Dobie on a stormy day 2 years prior. I heard "meaows" from under a concrete bench in a sari sari store near our house. I just can't ignore that plead for help so I took her home.

Fast forward 2 years later, I lost her. While my family had 3 dogs already, my household felt incomplete without a cat.

Several weeks later,  I knew I had to get myself a kitten...Where else can you get cats in the Philippines but in the streets. We (Jino and I) rounded up our main and side streets but no stray kitten was in sight.  We were on our final block heading home and feeling defeated when I saw an innocent orange kitten sitting alone in a step outside whoever's house. I snatch her. Yes I am a "Catnapper". I took her home with me with no apologies and  I called her... Sophie.

Sophie

Sophie was named after the grand winner of America's next top model Brits vs Americans. I have 4 dogs now and I have learned to accept that they will never get along forever. But Sophie is a toughie. She has learned to defend her self well. She has mastered her leaps to escape the claws and fangs of her adoptive dog siblings.

She has accepted that her territory is from the tables and up. Somewhere the dog's can't reach.  She knows that whenever I'm around she will be protected that's why maybe she's almost always within sight.

Every morning, Sophie would nap at any of our beds whichever is available. When she gets caught she'd meow and would seem to explain why she took your bed over someone else's. On good days when the bullies aren't in the mood to harass her she'd shasay from the stairs to the accent chairs (in the photo) swaying her hips almost looking like she's walking on the catwalk. She was named after a model in the first place.   Hah! cat on the catwalk!
At night she'd climb on the roof and chat with her cat friends under the moonlight and maybe with make believe coffee and biscuits (who knows?) and when they're done,  she would sneak in  via Ate Pating's window in the 2nd floor of our humble home and proceed to sleep by the steps of the stairs.

I wish I could read  cat's mind. I wish I could speak cat language.  But since I can't  I'd like to think I'm enough for her and if I'm not, I wish for the cat fairy to come visit me any day in my dream and tell me what Sophie wanted so I can give it to her. Meanwhile, I can continue what I have been doing all her life; love and protect her because that's what  Meowy-mums do.

Sophie is one of the inspirations why I came up with the FB Group Aspin & Puspin World. You will see Sophie's vids and latest photos there so I hope you'd check out the page.  See you there!
